14 Refactoring

Why refactor code that works?

  • There are better ways to do it
  • Repetition is dangerous
  • Maintaining spaghetti code is hard
  • Don’t want someone else to clean up your messes
  • Technical debt has to be paid off at some point

1. Identify the Need for Refactoring

  • Code Smells: indications that the code might need refactoring. Common smells include duplicated code, long methods, large classes, and complex conditionals.
  • Performance Bottlenecks: Use performance analysis tools to identify slow parts of your application.
  • Feedback: Consider feedback from code reviews or team discussions that highlight areas of the codebase that are difficult to understand or work with.

2. Ensure a Good Testing Base

Before making any changes, ensure you have a comprehensive test suite. Tests act as a safety net to ensure that refactoring does not alter the application's functionality.

  • Unit Tests: Make sure model and controller actions are well-covered by tests.
  • Integration Tests: Ensure that critical workflows of the application work as expected from the user's perspective.
  • Test Coverage Tools: Use tools like SimpleCov in Rails to assess test coverage and identify untested parts of your application.

3. Plan Your Refactoring

  • Small Steps: Plan to make small, incremental changes rather than large, sweeping modifications. This approach minimizes the risk of introducing errors.
  • Prioritize: Start with areas that will provide the most significant benefit in terms of readability, performance, or future development speed.
  • Document: Note down what you intend to refactor and why, especially if working in a team.

4. Execute Refactoring

  • Refactor Gradually: Implement one refactoring pattern at a time. Common patterns include extracting methods or classes, renaming variables for clarity, and reducing the use of conditionals.
  • Use Rails Conventions: Leverage Rails' conventions and helper methods to simplify code. For example, scopes in models can clean up complex queries.
  • Remove Duplicated Code: Use partials for views, concerns for models and controllers, and helper methods to DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) up your codebase.

5. Test After Each Change

  • Run Tests: After each refactoring step, run your test suite to ensure that the application still behaves as expected.
  • Manual Testing: In addition to automated tests, manually test changes in the browser to catch any unforeseen issues.

6. Review and Iterate

  • Code Review: Have another developer review your changes. Fresh eyes can catch issues you might have missed and provide feedback on your refactoring approach.
  • Refactor Further if Needed: Based on feedback and your observations, you may need to make additional adjustments.

7. Commit Regularly

  • Version Control: Use version control (e.g., Git) to commit your changes regularly. Small, descriptive commits make it easier to understand the refactoring process and backtrack if necessary.

8. Reflect and Document

  • Reflect: After completing your refactoring, take some time to reflect on the process. What went well? What could be improved next time?
  • Documentation: Update documentation to reflect any significant changes in the codebase or application architecture.
